The Monstera Peru Variegata is a rare, slow-growing vine with spectacular marbled foliage. This plant combines the tough look of Monstera karstenianum with the unique play of colors of variegation - a combination that is particularly popular among collectors. Its compact growth habit and striking leaf texture make this a true showpiece for the enthusiast of unusual foliage plants.
Origin
The botanical basis of this plant is in Central and South America, where the original Monstera karstenianum grows in the rainforest, often as a climbing plant against trees. The variegata-form, however, is not found in the wild, but created by spontaneous mutation or selective breeding.
Characteristics
The Monstera Peru is known for its thick, leathery leaves with a deeply veined pattern and dark green color. In the variegata-variant, these leaves become partly white, cream or light green, often with whimsical patterns or sectoral areas. No two leaves are the same - some leaves are almost completely variegated, others show a subtle marble motif. The slow growth and unpredictability of the variegated patterns make each plant unique as well as rare.
Care
Light
Place the Monstera Peru Variegata in a place with plenty of bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight on the variegated parts, as they are more susceptible to burning. Too little light can reduce variegation.
Temperature
Feels best at temperatures between 18 and 27 °C. Protect from drafts and rapid temperature changes in winter.
Substrate
Use an airy, well-drained substrate based on fine bark, coconut chips and sphagnum. Roots like oxygen and slightly moist conditions.
Humidity
A humidity of at least 60% is recommended. In drier air, the plant may benefit from a humidifier or a place in a display case.
Nutrition
During the growing season (spring to early fall), use a balanced fertilizer for foliage plants, but at half the recommended dosage. Avoid over-fertilizing on variegated plants.
Watering
Allow the top layer of the substrate to dry slightly before watering again. Preferably use demineralized water. Too wet roots can lead to rot, especially when combined with cold.
Flowering
The Monstera Peru rarely blooms in room conditions. Its ornamental value is entirely in its unusual foliage.
